Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her maternal grandparents and mother. She is an only-child. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs while she was studying secondary education. She hoped to become a teacher of English in a secondary institution. She had a dream of becoming an English teacher at high school was cut short after she dropped out of school. She began her career as a spoken-word artist and performing during poetry readings. She then teamed up to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They ended up collaborating as well as co-writing You Got Me. In Roots performance, she revealed herself to be an artist. Following that, she started collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Also, she was performers during the Canada stage of the Broadway musical Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
